A.A. Will Materials Corporation

History

150 Years

Alexander A. Will

In July of 1852, Alexander Archibald Will married Mary Morrison, both tenant farmers in the village of Old Deer Scotland. Alexander and Mary had a few children, but we will focus on Alexander Ambrose, born November 21, 1856, in Clackriach (Cla CREE a) Old Deer.

Emigrating from Aberdeen Scotland 150 years ago a ship sailed to Boston Harbor, a 3,200-mile passage, arriving on June 19th, 1873. On that boat was Alexander Ambrose Will, a sixteen-year-old boy searching for a better life! Some say he found work in Milton, Massachusetts tending to the estate and horses of the prominent Forbes family.

Workers moving and hauling materials in 1886.

We know for sure that within thirteen years he was an independent contractor, who in 1886 established his own business in Milton: A.A. Will Corporation. Mainly working with horses and horse-drawn carts delivering material to the surrounding area.

When of age, Alexanders' son Duncan F. Will took over the business, working tirelessly to maintain the growing business his father had created. However, in 1924, Duncan F. Will died very suddenly leaving his wife Nora and their three little children. Instead of letting the company go, or selling/passing on to someone more capable, Nora (Noonan) Will managed A.A. Will Corporation into the late '30s, when her teenage sons, Alex and Forbes, assumed responsibility for the business. This was unheard of at the time, a woman-run construction company.

In the 1950s and 1960s the brothers expanded their excavating and real estate businesses.

Early in the 1950’s Alex and Forbes stepped up and took over the company from their mother Nora, taking the company to a whole new level, exploring the possibilities in the sand and gravel business, and buying properties all over southeastern Massachusetts.

Keeping with tradition, Alex and Forbes passed the business off to Frank and Alexander (Sandy) with Frank keeping up with the sand and gravel division, and Sandy going into the site work and excavation world.

Frank has maintained the love and passion for the family business, bringing along his son Kevin, and taking the sand and gravel business to where it is today with A. A. Will Materials Corp.

Alex's sons Frank and Sandy assumed control in 1970 with Frank heading up materials and real estate while Sandy oversaw excavation construction.

Inclusive of its rich history and strong legacy, A.A. Will Materials is one of the largest and most respected landscape, custom soil, and aggregate suppliers in the Boston and Southeastern Massachusetts region.

From there, some would say “The rest is history!” but that would be far from the case! Over 150 years, 5 generations, A. A. Will has grown exponentially, each generation taking the company to the “next level” by following their heart and intuition, adjusting to the needs of the construction industry, and always keeping in mind “Where there’s a Will, there’s a way!”
